George Osborne’s first budget as Chancellor of the Exchequer was assured in delivery and ambitious in scope, aiming to wipe off the entire structural deficit over one parliament through a programme of deep cuts in public spending as well as tax rises that will be felt by all.


The proposals represent a gamble for the new Coalition Government, as it looks to reassure financial markets around the world, as well as voters at home, that it is fit to guide the country through the downturn.
