the uptake of innovation - improving quality in patient care

hanover hosted a breakfast event on 26 November 2009 to discuss how patient outcomes can be improved by encouraging greater uptake of innovative medicines and medical technologies throughout the NHS.

The speakers at the event were:

  • Andrew Dillon, Chief Executive of NICE
  • Chris Brinsmead, President of the ABPI and Chairman of AstraZeneca UK
  • Colin Morgan, Managing Director of Ethicon, Co-Chair of the Ministerial Medical Technology Strategy Board and Member of Life Sciences Delivery Board

Innovation is high on the NHS's agenda and the role of NICE is growing in scale and importance. The Office for Life Sciences has laid out a number of initiatives to encourage the uptake of innovation by the NHS and to make the health service an "innovation champion". In addition, the recent report by Professor Sir Ian Kennedy opened up debate on how the value of medicines and technologies could be assessed by NICE and the NHS.
