What does Mayor Boris mean for London?
hanover hosted their lastest event, What does Mayor Boris mean for London, at the Cinnamon Club in Westminster on 13th May.
The political geography of London changed on 1 May, with responsibility for planning, transport, policing, the environment and preparation for the 2012 Olympics moving into new hands. As the new administration begins to take shape, we debated the implications for businesses and local authorities in the capital.
Four close observers looked at Mayor Johnson's priorities and gave their thoughts on how he intends to govern London.
Dan Ritterband, Boris' Campaign Director and holder of the marketing brief on the transition team, spoke about the challenges of transforming the working culture at City Hall and the need to break down silos preventing different departments working together effectively.
Steve Norris, the former Conservative Mayoral candidate, said that pragmatism rather then dogma would govern Mayor Johnson's approach to transport. He also warned that Crossrail should only be considered 'in the bag' when the building work commenced.
Angie Bray, former Leader of the Conservative Group on the Greater London Assembly, made clear there would be a fundamental change in the relationship between the Mayor and the Boroughs. She said there would be no retrospective consideration of approved planning permissions.
Joe Murphy, Political Editor for the Evening Standard, outlined how Boris' administration would be a tmeplate for the way a future Conservative government might operate.
